Seek and Find

God can be found.

“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD,” Jeremiah 29:13-14a

If we declare and seek to achieve but one goal this year and every year, it should be to know God!

The Westminster Shorter Catechism succinctly asks as its number one question; “What is the chief end of man?” and the answer is; “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

Human history is replete with this goal and God has actually placed this goal within each one of us. History and our own wayward thinking prove how off-track humans can be in seeking to know God and glorify Him. Our pride mixed with ignorance and selfishness keep us enslaved to many little “g” gods rather than bowing in humility to the One True God who sent His One and Only Son as a sacrifice so we can truly know Him and enjoy Him forever.

We can only glorify God if we know Him. And we can only know Him through His Son, Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. And we can only learn of this amazing Triune God by the hearing of the Word (Romans 10). When we skip the knowing God part and let the glorify God part get cold, we shouldn’t wonder why we find no joy in God. It isn’t God who has left His first love, it is us and usually we know it. We’re just too stubborn and hardheaded to admit we have moved.

The captive children of Israel were in Babylon because they left their first love through many decades of kings. Yet God in His mercy and grace reached down through Jeremiah the prophet and reminded them that all they had to do was seek Him and then He would be found.

Is your chief end to know God, to glorify Him and enjoy Him forever? Then Seek Him…you will find Him!
